Provo Utah Airport
The new Provo Terminal construction began on Provo city’s new Airport terminal in 2019. This project consisted of two phases. Phase 1 was completed in 2019-2020 and Phase 2 finished in 2021-2022. Phase 1 consisted of subgrade prep which included surcharge loading of 237,700 CY of Granular Borrow, and 100,000 SY of geotextiles. Sunroc then broke ground for the construction of the Provo Airport Terminal in January 2020. In March 2020 COVID-19 slowed the world down, but Sunroc used that time to work through and accelerate the Surcharge loading & removal by February 2021. Phase 2 began in April 2021, and was substantially completed in May 2022, which included site electrical, concrete, asphalt paving, monument signs, canopies & landscaping
The new airport has a new four-gate, the 75,000 square foot terminal has been installed, with an optional expansion of up to 10 total gates. Phase One of construction took place from 2019 to 2020 with Phase Two taking place from 2021 to 2022. The $55 million project received funding from the Federal Aviation Administration, the state of Utah, Utah County, and Provo City.
There were many challenges associated with the project, including keeping groundwater out during the winter. That was done by building bridges over existing ditches while maintaining access to the site and the existing airport. Crews worked to complete surcharge loading, mass earthwork, new water lines, bus canopies, monument signage, flagpoles, concrete paving, asphalt paving, electrical work, and landscaping.
The new terminal will provide flyers with an enclosed family lounge, a Travelers Commons area, Streetscape Provo, Outlook Lounge, and Reunion Court – all designed to improve the flying experience of customers using the Provo Airport.
